Great reminder of how diversity slows companies down...I just wrote "Good looking out" to a woman in our company, in some companies someone might not know what that means and could think they are being "hit on"
I had to stop and think "hmmm, will this person get that slang?" Those kinds of pauses slow people down in communications, something which is cool in one culture might not be in another, and that slows companies down too, this is part of how we end up with homogeneous companies
People aren't entirely at fault. People often hire those who "get them" but "get them" or "gets the culture" often results in people who "look like me / act like me". Which misses out on the opportunity to build a business that understands all consumers.
If your customers are of all races / genders / etc, having a bunch of the same people building that experience misses out on potential new growth opportunities.
This reply all episode with @shaft really got me thinking years ago, the ketchup example (16:00) really connected dots for me for the business value of diversity: https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/76h54l
Oops, it's at 22 minutes. There's something genius about talking to people about the value of diversity, not through the lens of black and white (which raises people's shackles) but through a lens like ketchup which keeps people's minds open a bit longer to get the idea in there.
