Sentiment and Chelsea football club, a thread:
At the age of 6 I remember one of my first memories, a documentary of Chelsea's FA Cup win at the old Wembley . I saw Dennis Wise lift the trophy. And the colour of the shirt he wore just made me fall for the team.
Whenever I watched football, and the emotion and experience that came from it I enjoyed their adventures and was hurt with their failure, and that was all the heartbreak that made my hope that we'd someday compete to win the big trophies. And whenever it came close, we didn't.
And in the beginning of the road to glory came a player that would go on to encapsulate that. Frank Lampard. And when he became an important player, he delivered the league title with a memorable brace, and I shed tears that we won the premier League. And he did bigger things...
since.
I can never take away from those emotions that Vialli, Ranieri and Jose played in my early childhood and I will always be attached to that. And every trophy won, every step of the way was a reminder of a moment in time as a young Chelsea fan.

The idea that a sport as emotional and engaging as football requires you to be less sentimental is, for a lack of a better term, bullshit. And it takes away the soul of what enjoying competition and sport is about.
Winning is the aim in football, especially for a club that has set the standard for over a decade and a half, and in order to enjoy those successes sentiment and emotion will always play a role.
Back to Frank Lampard the manager, he always said we should seperate the player from

..the Manager , and I held it to that regard. But for me to not place the importance of super Frankie Lampard and what he means to this club is something that I cannot ignore no matter what anyone will say.
Ignoring all he did, and all he wanted to do with a young squad...

...would be ignorant to the sentiment of what Chelsea's road to success has put us through. And what is a football fan without sentiment? Believe me we all wanted it to work.
But then I remembered that football isn't the doe eyed joy my 6 year old eyes watched and saw for years ahead. It's become a colder, number based, robotic, troll fest, where fans fight meaninglessly amongst each other representing the same club. A club that's grown in size.
And that has new demands to keep up with the best. And at age 24, it's all just feels different. Knowing the club works like this in order to maintain a standard, Jose twice, Carlo, di Matteo and more painfully Frank. The manager plays a big role in that...
... attachment and sentiment. I may clown on Sarri but I was hoping he'd get over the hump and build a relationship with Chelsea but he left. Antonio was a Manager that evoked sentiment and passion, but it ended sourly and annoyingly. And Rafa, I prefer not to speak.
But these 3 won trophies and gave me emotion with the moment. Ivanovic's late header in Amsterdam, the 13 match run in 16-17, Eden's farewell. All unforgettable.
But I'm all that, Frank never had the chance my 17 year old self hoped he'd achieve. Win a trophy as manager.

I hoped we'd someday accomplish the feat he gladly wore the armband for. To lead us to the glory place that wonderful night in Munich. This time as a manager.
And still, even then the emotion was high, the double over Spurs, the late goals against Arsenal, the crazy European nights against Ajax home and away, and sealing champions league football with a young inexperienced squad made in Cobham. That's never going away.
To end this, I'd like to thank Frank for giving us hope, giving us joy and giving us what we all wanted at Chelsea, heart. You'll never be anything less than the best there is, the best there was and the best they'll ever be. Until next time. SUPER FRANK SUPER FRANKIE LAMPARD.
