Writing this post, thinking about this deck, helping other people with suggestions as helped me realize. White is a lot more about how you play the cards rather than how you build the deck. This is a huge difference between other colors and I think why people struggle with white. https://twitter.com/monowhiteborder/status/1353762579181686784
You really have to make the most out of every card you cast regardless of how good that card is in the format. If you do that, chances are you’ll have a good experience, but that’s not necessarily why people play edh. In edh, we tend to include the splashy cards that do the thing
In most cases, these card do the same thing regardless of how or when you play them. For example, Cultivate always gets you 2 lands. Read the Bones always get you 2 cards. But mentor of the meek, well mentor you have to have a follow up.
I’m someone who really likes this aspect of white, I know @Ilvaldi is the same. We love just squeezing advantage out of how we actually play the cards even more so than how we construct our decks. Deck construction is a part of it but the execution always comes in your plays.
We do it differently. Charles is working at the cEDH level and I’m almost always trying to build something with a heavy handed restriction, but the common thread is our emphasis on the actual play of the cards. Other colors definitely have this aspect, but for white is crucial.
You aren’t always going to have a slam dunk play outside of maybe a boardwipe, but if you build your deck with flexible cards that allow you to get the most out of them in your play, as I tried to do with this Taranika list. You’ll find white does have the tools to succeed.
This does beg the question though:
Should this be the case? Should white only reward people who approach the game with a spikier mind set? I’m not a spike, but I do try and make the most optimal play even with my most suboptimal decks. Should white have more Timmy cards?
