After losing the presidency for the 1st time in 24 yrs & both Senate seats for the 1st time in >60 yrs, the AZ GOP game-plan seems.. i guess, confusing? This week they censured 3 big-name AZ Republicans, including the sitting governor. For whom are they doing this? 1/n https://twitter.com/alexburnsNYT/status/1353134188799684608
My colleague Chris Weber and I surveyed over 1,000 Arizonans earlier this fall with the @UAZPolicyLab. What really stuck out at us was striking unity among Arizona Democrats and persistent division among AZ Republicans. Here’s what I mean: 2/n
Both Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly say they frequently wear mask but, while Democrats unanimously want them to be mandated, Republicans are split nearly 50/50 on this question. 3/n
When it comes to immigration, we asked whether immigrants help or hurt Arizona’s culture and economy.

AZ Democrats uniformly report that immigrants help our state economy. AZ Republicans are split. 4/n
When asked about whether immigrants help our state culture, again, Democrats speak with one voice: immigrants help. Republicans, on the other hand, are divided. 5/n
We asked whether undocumented immigrants who arrived here as kids should get a pathway to citizenship. Nearly all Democrats say yes. Republicans, again, are split: just over half saying yes, but a solid third oppose. 6/n
Maybe this is illustrative of a broader national pattern – but there’s no doubt, given our data, that AZ Republicans are splitting internally in ways that AZ Democrats are not. It seems to be a real possibility that the disunity is eroding their electoral support here in AZ. 7/n
Last thing -- survey was administered in September 2020 to 1,100 residents, using a non-probability sample weighted to census demographics, mostly online with some telephone to increase representation of heard-to-reach populations. 8/8
