In the past few weeks, there have been multiple statements utilizing Tourette Syndrome as a reference to someone not having a filter or cussing. In addition to being hurtful and highly offensive to those living with TS or Tic Disorders, these statements perpetuate stigma. (1/6)
They underscore the need for us, the @TouretteAssn and the TS community, to never let our foot off the gas pedal to increase awareness and understanding of TS. (2/6)
We need to continue to educate not only the public but also our government leaders, on why it should not be mocked or utilized as a descriptor for the behavior of someone who does not have the condition. (3/6)
To that end, please be assured that we reach out directly and privately to these individuals who have inappropriately used TS as a reference to educate them on this neurological condition in a productive manner. (4/6)
. @TouretteAssn's Virtual National Advocacy Day on March 3 is the perfect opportunity for each of us to educate our Senators and Representatives on what it is like to live with Tourette Syndrome or another Tic Disorder. (5/6)
It allows us to seek their support for key policy priorities, and to ensure their understanding that Tourette Syndrome should not be used as a punchline or descriptor. You can register at http://tourette.org/tourette-advocacy-day.
