Breaking down the Browns defense:
This will be the thread for how I take a look what the Browns may need to help improve the unit overall. I'm going to try and share my thoughts, charts and data as I find it. I look forward to all the interaction with everyone.

As I start this thread I do not have a set plan in place and will just see where it takes us.
1st: AB said the Browns need to improve on 3rd down defense and with that I ask two questions.
1. Is it coaching?
2. Is it the lack of talent?

Coaching:
Q: How did the Browns rank overall with 3rd down stops?
A: The Browns D ranked 25th with an allowed conversion rate of 44.78%
Q: Did the team get any better on 4th down?
A: No worse with an allowed 84.38% ranked 32nd

Q: Did the Browns defense rank well in any other categories?
A: Red Zone 15th
A: Rushing 8th
A: Take away 4th
A: Pass Rush (PFF) 11th
So looking over the data the Browns did well against the run and turn overs.

Q: So what AFC team was the best at stopping 3rd down plays?
A: The Miami Dolphins
Here is a chart with both teams side by side. Next I want to look at how the rosters stack up. Also PFF has the fish ranked 15th overall compared to the Browns at 21st

Side note: OK I have been going over the numbers for a few days now and while I'm trying to stay unbiased to see where the data takes me I can't help but to think about how a fast hard hitting linebacker (most likely at Will) could fix this.
I wanted to see how the Browns stack up against the Dolphins and Steelers. Then using most of the same stats find both the positive and negative players to get an idea of how they impact the data. I also added the positional salary for all 3 teams.
I have a few thoughts so far
1. Damn I want Jordan Elliott to be good
2. Garrett/Richardson are the cornerstones of the D
3. Can they really upgrade Vernon?
4. Goodson may be worth bringing back
5. Delpit is going to help

Terrance Mitchell: UFA Age 28 last contract 3 years $10 Mill
PFF Rank 31st
Malcolm Butler: Age 30 last contract 5 years $61 Mill
PFF Rank 19th
If Mitchell gets a few picks he's right with Butler

Oh

Ok well I'm done for tonight and I'll have more coming all week. Thoughts so far
1. The Browns need an upgrade at FS bad
2. For Woods defense to work they need more pass rush
3. Communication has to improve 100% in the secondry

After watching some film from the Browns defense I'm now looking to breakdown the position groups. The 2021 53-man should consent of 8 total defensive lineman. With the current group I believe Myles Garrett, Sheldon Richardson, Jordan Elliott are a lock leaving 5 spots open.
That's an overview of the Browns defensive line currently under contract minus Trevon Young who is on IR and questionable to return and futures contracts. Defensive end is a huge need.
I wouldn't be shocked to see defensive tackle Vincent Taylor make his way back for at least camp unless he signs with another team. His production was trending up all season with 3 strong final games. Waived by the Bills and claimed by the Browns Sept 6th 2020 & currently a UFA
The Browns also have a futures contract with DE #69 Cameron Malveaux who they used to bring up and down from the practice squad. He's a possible sleeper in the mix and someone to watch in camp.
After looking at the roster and a quick check of FA's I found two players I believe would fit the parameters of age, productions and contract for AB with the available cap.
1st Carl Lawson Age 25
projected contract 4 yr's 35 Mill
PFF Rank: 14th of 112
6 Sacks 24 Hits 34 Hurries 22 Tackles
Can play multiple positions
Lawson will only hit the yearly cap at that number for 8.8 mill

2nd Solomon Thomas Age 25
Projected contract 3 yrs, $16,868,599
PFF Rank: N/A
2019
3 Sacks 4 Hits 8 Hurries 17 Tackles
Coming off and ACL the price is right for the former 1st rd pick who is strong against the run and only hit the yearly cap for 5.6 mill

Sticking with the defensive line I'm going to look at a few mock drafts that have the Browns taking a player from that group.

Next up is the Browns Linebacker Group also the group hit hardest do to one year contracts. The Browns have a total of 3 players currently under contract for the 2021 season losing 3 to free agency and Trevon Young on IR unknown. They'll keep 5/6 on the 53-man roster
Looking at the current linebacker group it's clear that AB will need to make this a top priority. IMO I would try to resign B.J. Goodson to a 2 year, $4,100,000 contract to help develop Phillips. Sign the best WILL LB I can in Free Agency and then draft his replacement.
If Andrew Berry is looking to make a splash in free agency at linebacker I would have to believe Denzel Perryman would be tops on the list.
