The fact that lots of people are upset that *The President of the United States* owns a nice watch is a fantastic example that some subset of Americans hate civil servants so much that they believe all of us should live paycheck-to-paycheck, even after ~50 yrs of service.
Military families on food stamps, underpaid teachers buying school supplies out of their own meager salaries—a subset of Americans believes serving the people means signing up for a life of penury and penny-pinching, instead of acknowledging that public servants...
Perform critical, often life-saving tasks that in many circumstances require advanced education and experience.

Who benefits when we demand public servants work for meager wages?

Corporations, of course. Government entities in the US set the bar as far as wages...
And working conditions. Demand poor pay and working conditions for government workers and you can guarantee that the bar will be nice and low for corporations.

This entire milieu is why the US has such greater wealth disparity than most of the other industrialized nations....
So please, from the bottom of my civil servant heart:

Stop talking about the watch.

Start talking about wages commensurate w labor, for everyone. Restaurant workers. Retail staff. Healthcare workers. Educators. Servicemembers. The DMV staff. The policy wonk at the State Dept.
