What do today’s @ONS stats tell us about the Covid risks facing teachers? Thread 👇
But this is only “half the picture” says @MaryBoustedNEU who points out that the stats only include Covid deaths, not cases. As teachers are a relatively young as a group they may be less likely to die - but could still suffer from long Covid. https://www.tes.com/news/teacher-covid-death-data-only-half-picture
The NEU’s @andrewbaisley also raises some interesting points. Firstly, that the stats cover a timeframe when schools were closed to most pupils for six months.
Secondly, that they include university lecturers and Ofsted inspectors, which you’d think might face a different level of risk to those working every day in crowded schools.
There's also been anger from @ToryFibs that the figures exclude the over-64s. When @Specktator100 unpicked the stats for secondary & primary teachers, they showed that the death numbers are more than doubled when this older group is included. https://www.tes.com/news/covid-teacher-deaths-double-when-over-64s-are-added
