You know what I really admired? Man Utd under Sir Alex.

The way that club was run was incredible and an example to everyone who wants to build sustainable success.

The board's job was to make sure that results didn't turn so bad that a change needed to happen. Nothing else.
The technical director(if they even had one) was responsible for negotiating the deals that Sir Alex wanted, be that incoming transfers or outgoings.

Everything else was down to Sir Alex, the MANAGER, not coach but manager.

Every hire that the club made, be that...
a new player, a new coach or even a new chef, Sir Alex decided who was to be hired so that he, the manager, could have a good relationship with them.

Every morning when he came in for training, he would have a nice chat with the cleaning lady about her life and family.
Imagine what a good environment that must be?

If he wanted a player in the transfer market, he instructed the board to go get him. If they couldn't, Sir Alex would make the decision on what to do next. Not one single player was signed without Sir Alex wanting them.
If a player in his squad started getting loud or becoming too much of a "superstar" in their own head, they were sold. No matter how big or small they were.

Anyone remember Roy Keane? He was one of Sir Alex's most trusted players. He was his captain. One day, he got...
up in the dressing room and started questioning Sir Alex's authority. You know what happened? His contract was terminated. ROY KEANE!! It's like Chelsea terminating Azpilicueta's contract!

And NO ONE in that dressing room said ANYTHING about that. You know why?
Because that's the respect they had for him. He earned that respect over time, time he was given after almost getting the sack multiple times. They stuck by him in the first 3 years without any trophies whatsoever and he eventually sat there for over 20+ years, being the most...
successful team in England, if not Europe in that timeframe.

Now compare that situation to Chelsea. To prove how little power the manager has at Chelsea, Frank Lampard instructed the board to offload a multitude of players last summer so that morale in the squad wouldn't...
drop during the season from having too many players. The board failed him because they didn't agree with the players needing to go and because they couldn't get paid a premium for them.

Lampard also wanted the club to sign Nathan Aké, which the board again didn't think...
was good enough. He wanted Declan Rice, the board thought it would be embarrassing to re-sign him after letting him go for nothing at 14 years old(😂). Fair, they did give him Ben Chilwell. However, that was against the board's will and they needed A LOT of convincing..
to make that happen. The likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz was players that Frank didn't really want at the club. I'm not saying he minded them coming in as they are elite players but he would never choose those ahead of certain others.
Now when players started acting up, like he said they would, he doesn't have the authority to do anything about it so what happens is,

1) A player starts causing issues behind the scenes(let's call him Hustle).

2) As the manager doesn't have the authority to do....
anything about it, more players join in as they don't respect the manager because they don't fear him.

3) They go behind the manager's back and complain to the board.

4) The board sides with the players and instructs the manager to make these players happy or risk losing...
his job.

5) The manager plays players that aren't suited for the team, results go down and morale keeps going down, now also amongst the other players as their playing time has decreased as a consequence of the fringe players coming back in.

6) Manager is blamed and sacked.
All of that could have been avoided had the manager or in this case coach, had a bit more power to do things the way he wanted.

This is the reason this club won't change anytime soon. Chelsea will never be a "project" because of these very reasons.
Chelsea has fallen out with José Mourinho, Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri and now even Frank Lampard. There is only one constant: The Chelsea board.

I wish all the luck in the world on Thomas Tuchel as I love Chelsea and want them to do well.
However, I can't help but feel that we're going to be having this exact discussion again in 18-24 months.
