gonna rewatch yesterdays NYK-POR game and do some (gasp) clipping and breakdowns, to come in this thread. looked at the box score to see what to look at here, will address specifics if ya'll want (lmk)
right now things that stand out:
- IQ in general but i want to look at how they run the offense when he's in
- why did mitch and RJ play under 30 mins
- benefits of starting Burks
right out the gate there's some red flags with Mitch. simple screen the screener action here stuff, no idea why mitch doesn't come out higher on this. rest of the game, with Lillard handling, they have Mitch coming up to level with the screen. lazy, this is easy money for Dame
look how far behind the play mitch is here. then the absolute weakest attempt at the screen. going through the motions here. fatigue, or injury related, or pure laziness, maybe all three? don't know. but what I do know is, thibs absolutely 1000000% hates this shit
low hanging fruit here - you probably recall Elf taking 3's off Randle doubles, which is obviously a waste. here they got Burks one pass away instead of Elf, so the help means Burks is taking that shot instead of Elf (who also sets a backscreen on RJs defender, good idea)
another mitch note here, he's gotta clear out once Randle gets the ball. he's standing in the way and dragging a potential extra defender towards the play. he does clear, but he takes his sweet ass time. you can see the theme here. rough quarter for mitch
time to bitch about nerlens a bit. portland playing super small, so this is hardly easy, but watch him on this play - complete no mans land. Covington is the screener so you can't leave him, fine, but he DOES leave him while also NOT helping contain Lillard this is awful
the gamble in transition gives up 3 points here
1. gives trent an open lane downcourt instead of containing. 4 on 3 (lucky trent can't handle the rock)
2. Melo could have taken the 3 but Payton covers. MISMATCH
3. POR goes right to mismatch
4. help comes
5. melo dime, and one
if he gets back on this play instead of gambling it's 4 on 4, you can contain and avoid mismatches. instead it's 3 points
overall 1Q was kinda weird, little snowball effect going on with NYK. POR was enjoying some nice luck early with derrick jones going off, totally unsustainable, Lillard took advantage of some basic mistakes, nothing unfixable. bench unit was gross and that's how you go down big
IQ minutes! decision making is still key. no need to throw this up so fast. defender is behind, meaning the big has to contain. keep your dribble and make Giles play this correctly. if help comes off corner to noel u have knox there. PATIENCE!
another early example. good read to reject the screen and drive but this is bad shot selection. keep your dribble, no need to commit to that shot. could hit knox for a 3 if u can sync it with Hood stepping in to help. bail out call, can't rely on that
I do think IQ has patience, it's just not showing during the real NBA PG reps where reads aren't necessarily obvious. not surprising. when it's more obvious, he executes well. this is exactly what i want to see, extra quarter second waiting and he spots noel wide open. great pass
double drag here, this is again a pretty easy read and i'm happy to see him pull on this after being so tentative earlier in the year. this HAS to be his shot. great balance and footwork here as well. that was CLEAN
again, patience goes a long way. instead of chucking it up the second he gets clear, hesi gets him a couple feet closer for a better look. Giles has no contest at all. this is a good shot considering his proclivity w the floater. nice screen. IQ jumper means Simons goes over. A+
this one is fun, i love this. look at Giles dogging it, Simons behind. IQ coming back across Giles gets him to commit (bad decision). IQ floats the line b/w Simons and Giles for a while which keeps BOTH guys occupied. leaves noel open. tough finish, idc, this is a GREAT feel play
cat and moused these fools
when the reads are EASY he's great. when stuff gets messy, it got a lil dicey in that 2nd quarter. this is a four point swing. obviously cannot pick up your dribble like that, particularly in this situation
anther small but encouraging play. IQ muscle memory is to go right into PnR. needs to rely on team offense when playing with starters. he remembers this literally midplay. most of the year he pulls out and runs PnR with mitch again. this is genuinely growth
when i say i want him to run the offense, this is the type of shit i'm referring to. this general mindset is important for him. good job
hokay this took longer than i thought gotta go back to work will finish later
