This is a gentle nudge for those who are interested in obtaining a writing residency and or a fellowship in 2021. This is a short thread that I hope will help. Especially if you're researching funding opportunities for long-term projects, or just looking for a space to write.
Last year I received a Soros fellowship, as a result, I have funding to executive produce my docuseries podcast. You can propose other ideas, I was just giving you an example. The deadline is 2/17. It's VERY competitive. Start working on your proposal now. https://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/grants/soros-justice-fellowships
I used to write grants for non-profits so my first draft of my Soros proposal was super formal. Move away from that style. Try to allow more of who you are to shine through your words. Less technical, more storytelling. It worked for me.
Practice running your idea by an audience who isn't afraid to tell you the truth. If you are selected as a finalist you will have a panel interview. It helps if you did a test run with folks who let you know when you are bombing. This is also something I did and it worked well
Shifting gears towards a writing residency. Last year I was accepted into both programs I applied for. This was one of them. No application fee. One week in the Catskills in NY. Solo time to write. Check the link to find info about their 2021 schedule https://www.sprucetoninn.com/artist-residency
This writer's residency has been floating around in my professional circles. I don't know much about it so I can't co-sign anything. Just sharing info. Dig in. If you are interested NOW is the time to start applying. https://www.mvicw.com/fellowships
This is the second residency I was accepted into. A month in France. Food, housing, and travel included. COVID delayed it to 2021. Applications are on pause because of COVID but put this on your radar. https://www.lamaisonbaldwin.fr/writers-residency
Oh, and if you want to donate to the lamasiaon Baldwin residency you should hit up the website. It's such a great opportunity for writers.
