Thread. Lots of discussion about a one-off payment to support people on #UniversalCredit, in place of retaining the £20 a week uplift.
However, this would be challenging for three key reasons. @jreynoldsMP 1/n
However, this would be challenging for three key reasons. @jreynoldsMP 1/n
1. You would end up with a system where the payment would only reach those who are on #UniversalCredit *now* - it would do nothing to support those who may see a drop in the hours or lose their job and need to access the benefit after early April. 2/n
2. We know that income stability is just as important as level of income for many people on #UniversalCredit. Maintaining the uplift would help people to budget and manage their money in what will likely be a challenging couple of months for many. 3/n
3. Lastly, removing the uplift would put unemployment benefit levels at their lowest in real-terms since 1992, at the same time as a recession and just before unemployment is set to peak. 4/n
Maintaining the #UniversalCredit uplift is the best way to support people during the economic uncertainty that lies ahead - providing families with the financial stability to pay the bills and make ends meet as we recover from this crisis. 5/n https://wearecitizensadvice.org.uk/the-chancellor-has-an-important-decision-to-make-he-must-keep-the-lifeline-b2164fc78c59
