2 years ago, an iron ore dam operated by Brazilian mining giant Vale burst near Brumadinho, killing 272 people & contaminating the river Paraopeba on which many depended on for water and for their livelihood.

What is Europe’s responsibility in this? A #Brumadinho2anos thread👇
1/3: the burst could have been prevented if all companies along the chain had paid proper respect to their obligations.

Yet a subsidiary of German certifier TĂśV SĂśD certified the dam as stable just a few months before the burst. A case is ongoing against the firm in Germany.
2/3 With a strong #HumanRights & #Environmental due diligence law at EU and German level, it could become easier for victims to access justice for outrageous human rights violations like these, as European companies that cause harm even outside of the EU would be held liable.
3/3 Maybe then companies will take their responsibilities towards people and planet more seriously. We need to be able to hold companies accountable for their actions!

All eyes on the important vote on #DueDiligence that will take place this Wednesday in @EP_Legal committee.
