It's great that young people are getting props but social media really does encourage a culture where you have to be the youngest and best in order to make a splash
It's the antithesis of the slow marination that breeds both longevity but also real intention and confidence in your goals and life choices
Saw another tweet which was like 'X is the youngest to ever do x' and amazing for them but god, does this cultural approach to age wear on others. Also the weird deference to Gen Z all the time that ignores that actual generations are about 20-30 years apart
I know it is absolutely pointless trying to talk anyone out of feeling age pressure but i don't personally expect to have a real clue about what my 'goals' are for the first chunk of my life until I'm at least 33-35. And even then, I'm sure they'll change once I hit 40
Right now I am vibing and just doing things I either enjoy or pay the rent. It is obviously so so fine to be driven but if you are young and don't have that one burning goal but just a vague sense of 'i should be further along' and it dogs you, please, I beg, shut that voice down
It's not specific enough to be useful to you. Either you sit down and work out what you actually want to be doing right now, with the awareness that it might change in future, and gun for that, or you just focus on doing what you can right now. Youth is the time to experience
Also things are currently quite shit and a lot of opps are actually shut off to young people. The ones who break through make that even more noticeable. Not being the first 19 year old to win the Booker Prize is so fine.
I don't want to be the youngest to x and be monetised for all that when I'm a baby, I just want to enjoy as much as I can and do work I'm proud of and LIVE
