@JohnFetterman just caught your @CBSThisMorning piece and I have a bit of a bone to pick with you.
It’s about your use of the phrase “working people” when describing those perceived to be forgotten by the Democratic Party and the trap that represents.
Now, I’ve been a reporter for a lot of years including stints in Reading, Levittown and New York’s Southern Tier. The paper I worked for in the Southern Tier also covered Towanda and other former steel towns. The issues were legion and writing many of those stories was tough.
They were “working people”. Hard working people. I’d never say anything different.
But, let’s talk about the place I cover now, Philadelphia.
In addition to having the better of the state’s convenience stores in Wawa, Philadelphia has people who have been hit hard economically.
As I’m sure you know, Philly has the highest poverty rate for a city it’s size in the country and has for a while.
That’s because there are a whole lot of “working people” here that aren’t, well, working.
And we have to recognize that, not only as media, but also as leaders.
