THREAD: Electric utilities are greenwashing their climate commitments and it's ruining our chances of hitting 1.5C. Co-authors @leahstokes Cara Bottorff and I investigated the data that @SierraClub has been tracking as advocates for many years https://coal.sierraclub.org/the-problem/dirty-truth-greenwashing-utilities
We grade the 50 top utilities based on coal and gas generation and their 79 operating companies.
We assign scores based on their plans to retire coal by 2030, terminate plans to build new gas plants, and build clean energy. The average score out of 100 is a planet-burning 17.
These companies are only committed to retiring 1/4 of their coal by 2030. They're only building clean energy equivalent to 1/5 of their current coal and gas generation. They're building so many new gas plants!
We looked at utilities with net-zero pledges vs. those without net-zero pledges and there was no meaningful difference in their scores ::Slow clap::
Go check out the data dashboard we created! This dataset was really dynamic and interesting to work with. https://public.tableau.com/profile/john.romankiewicz#!/vizhome/Utilitydashboard/Story1
