Last week, we mentioned how the African Union had secured 270 million COVID-19 vaccine doses for members. Today, we have more!
The African Union has begun to pre-order COVID-19 vaccines for all African Union Member States, 270 million of them. Afeximbank will facilitate payments by providing guarantees of up to US$2 billion to the manufacturers.
The chairperson of the AU, President Ramaphosa secured these doses through the COVID-19 African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT) from Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.
According to African Union Special Envoy, Strive Masiyiwa:

“These are historical times. For the first time in history, Africa has secured access to millions of vaccine doses in the middle of a pandemic as most of Western countries.”
We will update you when we have more. For now, continue to stay safe!
