The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force on Friday. It's now international law. So what's next for @nuclearban?
We will continue the work we've done so far to get more states to ratify but we'll also work closely with states parties and encourage them to utilize UN forums, embassies around the world, bilateral meetings, state visits to promote the treaty & discourage prohibited behaviour.
3. Bring onboard states that currently possess or endorse these weapons of mass destruction. Public opposition to nuclear weapons is strong in many countries & we will work to ensure that decision-making is reflective of what people want. https://www.icanw.org/nato_poll_2021
We will use the #nuclearban treaty to grow support in these countries by working with politicians and parliamentarians, trade unions, cities, academics, scientists, and many other groups. We will get these governments to support this new international law eventually.
4. Enforce the norm. We will hold them accountable to this new global norm. @UofCalifornia, you develop weapons of mass destruction banned under international law. @Airbus, you are building weapons meant to mass murder civilians. @UBS, you are financing these weapons of terror.
Today, ICAN has 608 partner organisations in 107 countries. We have grown strong partnerships with governments, international organisations, national actors. We have NEVER had this much support for the ban. The global coalition for #nuclearban is stronger than it's ever been.
Believe me, just because we got the #nuclearban into force we will not be slowing down - we're planning for the opposite. We are coming for your nuclear weapons!
