This will be @BEworks ' second Choice Architecture Report -- check out the first in the quoted tweet 👇

2/
. @malik_wardah Introduces the report and the speakers: @KellyBEworks @danariely @MWhittaker_ and Shy Mindel

3/
"It's incredibly hard for us to stop doing the science and *write* about it" - @KellyBEworks

Luckily they were able to sit down and write 10 Essays 📃 for this report!

I'm particularly keen to read @NinaMazar 's thoughts on Diversity & Inclusion + Behavioral Science

4/
A big question @KellyBEworks asks that I really resonate with: "To what end? [...] Where ought we go? What dreams ought we hold?"

see, e.g., previous discussion on theory-building 👇

5/
✨ Innovation + Purpose can lead us to Aspiration ✨

(but what do we mean by Aspiration?)

@KellyBEworks says these Qs are weaved into the report
Now to @danariely:

Dan will have to leave for a talk about, "Are we more rational or irrational?", which he considers the wrong question (I agree)

The right question, he says, is, "What can we improve?"

7/
Dan highlights the role of behavioral science as looking at 'the little details' -- using as an example the large number of little details changed by online meetings (can't smell each other, can't see micromovements, everyone is smaller while self is larger, etc.)

8/
One insight from asking employees last year how they feel:

Little things that used to matter now matter much more 🔍

Big example: saying THANK YOU and being APPRECIATED 🙏 is now much more important!

Little example: people now sometimes wave at the end of meetings (yep!)

9/
From small questions we go on to bigger:

- How do we get people aligned with the mission of the company?
- How do we introduce new people?
- How do we communicate longevity?

>> More pointers towards the role of social sciences

10/
Now Dan asks: When all this is over... what do we want to keep, what do we want to change?

e.g., cook more or less?, relationship to nature?, hierarchical relationship between employees?, new models for meetings or back to normal?

11/
(btw, I vote for walking meetings! my pre-pandemic n of 1 was very good, would recommend)

12/
One possible tension between work-from-home vs office:

EFFICIENCY ... vs ... CREATIVITY

(I would love to see the data, though I have ALWAYS worked from home... what does that say about my creativity?)

13/
@danariely end by suggestion that full work-from-home won't be good for the companies, but we'll need to find a balance.

Hope to see some more thoughts on this is his essay :)

14/
@KellyBEworks introduces @MWhittaker_ (and praises @justcapital_, a non-profit Martin founded) and Shy Mindel

15/
"The market should be rewarding companies for solving major societal challenges" - @MWhittaker_

(If only!)

But Just Capital helps by providing information on how large, publicly traded brands are performing on the public's priorities.

16/
Shy Mindel is CEO of babyark -- a company focused on creating the safest car seat that parents *also* love to use

17/
On the role of scientific thinking at @justcapital_ :

@MWhittaker_ mentions the need for data, analysis, and honest inquiry, around the role of business and society -- are the companies *actually* succesful at improving lives?

Says data is missing from the area of ...

18/
"Corporate Purpose."

- need to be clear on the outcomes,
- need to measure them,
- need to assess whether outcomes are actually being met

^ that's what Martin sees as the important "scientific mindset" (data + analysis)

19/
@KellyBEworks agrees: on the one hand, Behavioral Economics is about human stories, and people love that, but on the other hand you have -- underpinning it --Behavioral Science with the important role of data, experimentation, and evidence.

20/
(Lots of talking about data and analysis, little about theory so far -- but what is science without theory? 🙃)
Shy Mindel, whom we met earlier: "scientific approach drives everything that we do", so obviously needs to drive product design.

21/
Shy on the "Say-do bias":

- need to figure out what to really invest in
- e.g., design is important for parents buying car seats, but only inasmuch as it concerns SAFETY (according to surveys -- would love to know more about the survey + method though)

22/
Last Q for both (from @KellyBEworks): What is one piece of advice you have for business leaders for 2021?

23/
@MWhittaker_ "Put humans first." 2020 reminded us all of 'the human factor.'

There's a fundamental shift happening: to drive towards economic prosperity while taking the human element into consideration.

"Think people."

24/
Shy Mindel: Think people, think humans. But from the product design perspective: Design for people, for humans.

Have emotion in products - a lovable product.

25/
@KellyBEworks ends by reflecting on the changes imposed by the pandemic and how we were forced to address them. A message of home:

"We don't need a pandemic to ask the big questions."

26/
Kelly hears at least 3 lessons:

- There's an opportunity for businesses to be dialed in to the challenges of society. What role does your business play in bringing people together?
- It's time to embed BE into business
- Take a more holistic approach to measurement

27/
Now @malik_wardah with some closing remarks and thanks to the people involved.

The Choice Architecture Report 2021 should be arriving in our inboxes any second now, and there will be a monthly newsletter.

28/
That's all for now! Thanks all :)
