LRT gets at some of my feelings about the idea that opening schools is the answer to poorly constructed mental healthcare system. We wasted resources fighting to open when we could have strengthened the support systems that make staying at home safer/more feasible/shorter.
We talk abt opening as if going to school during a pandemic returns mental health to "normal." We opened when we probably shouldn't have. It causes a different set of stressors. The ideal IMO would have been to bolster systemic support for staying at home.
Pushing resources to open also means ignoring those who can't safely return once "everyone" has gone back. Because if there is one thing our education system doesn't do well, it's is support BIPOC and white disabled folks who deviate from the "norm." We bear the cost either way.
