This rhetoric from Angus King is totally inappropriate. From a macroeconomic perspective, it's just a deeply unserious thing to say, out of step with the intellectual consensus. Morally, it suggests a callousness toward the economic realities facing American families today.
Even if you don't understand the macro and financial factors in play, the "think of the grandchildren" framing is an embarrassment.
If you want to help your grandchildren, help them *now* by helping their parents. The crisis is not some vague future maybe. It's here, it's right now, it has been in the news for a year, and if we do not act it will get worse.
