The US death toll from COVID will always make me think of my grandmother, who died early this morning. When I was in boarding school, when I was sick for years as a kid, she was always there. /1
It breaks my heart that I could not be there for her in person this time. When people assume that COVID will just kill the elderly, they forget that God willing, they too will be old one day. They gloss over who the elderly are. /2
At 92, she read a poem and danced at my wedding. At 94, she liked to read me Edna St. Vincent Millay. At 95, she told me stories about she had waited for all of WW2 to marry my grandfather, who died decades ago. At 101, she played dress up with my little girl. /3
She was one of my best friends for every day of her life. The last thing she said was that my grandfather, whom she loved since high school, was coming to pick her up. I hope she is right.
