why you need to watch and read chihayafuru
🔆 a spoiler-free thread
chihayafuru is a coming-of-age story of passion and camaraderie narrated through a sport. it touches on many themes of talent versus hard work, mentors, desperation, youth, old age, romance, and more.
meet chihaya, the mc! she has but one goal — to support her sister’s modeling career. that changes when she meets arata, whose aim is to become the “master” of karuta. this is where chihaya's passion is born, and it is so exciting to witness her journey!
karuta is a 🇯🇵 card game; the players must memorize 100 poems. once the reciter cites a verse on the card, the player must grab that card before their opponent. you can play as a team or individually. it's unpredictable and all characters have a different kind of love for it.
what's amazing about karuta is that any gender and any age can participate against one another. you don't get to see that in a lot of sports series.
the series is brimmed with symbolism from the poems that express the characters and their experiences. you’ll find yourself appreciating poetry!
taichi and arata have a rivalry like no other, not just in sport but in romance. i’m sorry to the love triangle haters but we have a love triangle. yet, the story does not center around this because the beauty of chihayafuru is to witness the growth of all three characters.
wakamiya shinobu: the "queen" of karuta and the antagonist of the story. reaching shinobu is an aim of chihaya, and it is so satisfying to see chihaya get closer and closer. both are beautiful, well-written, and strong women 🙏
suou hisashi: the master of karuta for YEARS. he has an interesting backstory, and his student-teacher dynamic with taichi is one of the many amazing character dynamics of chihayafuru.
teachers & teammates. these side characters play a big role in supporting chihaya and taichi, all while trying to reach their own goals as well. many of the students struggle with their own issues, yet they overcome it with their support. you can't help but cheer for them!
if you enjoy sports, literature, school clubs grow in number, friendship with a bit of romance, strong female protagonist + then go watch/read now!
