There have always been intersex people (folks born with sex characteristics (whether external or internal anatomy, hormones, chromosome patterns) that don’t match typical binary notions of male or female bodies).

Chances are you know, have met, etc someone who is intersex. Whether or not they’re out to you, whether or not they even know this about themselves (some people learn later in life.)
