I think a lot of the neithers see political unionism as the barrier to progress in NI in terms of social policies. At every point, political unionists have been against equal marriage, abortion rights etc. Ppl look at old school DUPers and think, nope. Then we have Brexit.
I think the rejection of unionist parties goes further than that tho. People are rejecting orange/green labels and right wing politics. Liberal/Left pro union types are fed up with political unionism as well.
I'm not saying that we're done with conservative politics here btw. NI is still a very conservative place. The neithers, when you get down to it, are hardly left wing.
I also have thoughts about how certain middle class neithers are rejecting the unionist label because of their views of the WC...but that's a whole other thread
