Morning, friends.
We're all over the place in games played but we have 5 or 6 for most, so we're starting to get hints of what teams are up to. Some interesting/new ones relative to last year:
Good: BUF, MIN
Fun: ARI, WPG
Dull: WSH
Bad: PHI
Avg: CHI

PDO breakdown
Another game, another commitment to 5v5 goals for everyone in PIT.
BUF, COL, and TOR have underperformed their offensive processes so far.

Quality per shot
STL has fully embraced conservative hockey early on. They're taking the fifth-lowest quality per shot and allowing the third-lowest quality per shot against. Everything on the perimeter for everyone.

Goal results
BUF, MIN, COL, & TOR catch the eye early on as teams that are playing well but underscoring the quality they create. I'd bet on all four having better results going forward.
MTL is scoring /a ton/ but they do create lots of quantity and quality to support that.

"Pace" (5v5)
As you might expect from a team featuring McDavid & Draisaitl down the middle, EDM plays must-watch hockey. Their games feature the fourth-highest rate of shots, the second-highest rate of quality shots, & EDM's managed a positive share of expected goals.
It's fun!

Expected win %
Looking at all-sits goals, WPG, WSH, NJD, PHI, and FLA (2 gp
) have good results but have subpar expected win percentages by expected goals.
The flip is a group of unlucky teams that deserve better: BUF, BOS, EDM, COL, then SJS, CHI, and NYR a little too.

xG differential
Flipping the calendar one day forward still allows teams to move a lot this early on.
BUF, MIN, and COL are third, fourth, and fifth in xG share but all have negative goal differentials so far.
CBJ, TOR, and PIT are just break-even-ish.

Goals vs expectation
After 6 games, STL has scored 6 more goals than expected and allowed 8 more goals than expected, all while playing the most conservative, perimeter-shot-oriented style in the league. Dull style but all of the goals for everyone anyway.

xG daggers by division
After yesterday's game, DET slides to the bottom of the Central and CHI floats up to third-best.
CAR hasn't played in a little while now but they're good enough to stay right where they are all season long (once they're back to playing again).

Teams over time
MTL has been superb. CGY has looked sharp overall. Then EDM, WPG, and TOR have jumbled together around break-even.
OTT has mostly hung around so far.
VAN has totally plummeted.

Here's two different ways of viewing each team's running xG differential at 5v5.
Both views have teams sorted from best to worst by division, top to bottom.

Team shot maps
On avg, EDM shoots from just under 31 ft out. That's the closest in the league. TOR, OTT, and DAL are next closest, each coming in just under 33 ft away.
For context, FLA and STL shoot from furthest out, on avg, at just over 40 ft.
