“How can I help?”

4 words. And the tech world completely changed.

What has been Miami Mayor’s @FrancisSuarez strategy? Was there even one?

What should marketers learn? And other politicians?

Let’s dive in: https://twitter.com/FrancisSuarez/status/1335037068108554241?s=20
I see @FrancisSuarez as an opportunist (in the best sense of the word).

IMO, he knew 2 things:

1) Covid opened a small window to compete with SF and NY for the tech hub

2) To take advantage of it, he needed to act quick and talk the right language

Let’s break these down:
1)

Miami’s boom looks like an overnight success.

It’s not.

He said it himself:

“everything you’ve seen lately is the result of a decade’s long push to bring high-paying jobs to Miami and people are finally taking notice” https://twitter.com/FrancisSuarez/status/1351167886136643587?s=20
2)

In a world where most politicians don’t understand social media, @FrancisSuarez is a marketer:

- He gets Twitter and how to engage.
- He understands content
- He uses influencers and PR.
- Uses DJ Khaled gifs...

even “How can I help?” is investors verbiage.

Let's see:
Content:

The “Cafecito Talks” is the perfect long pillar show.

Every founder/politician should have one.

It allows him to:

- discuss things in a longer format
- network and build relationships with key people
- have a stream content that leverages his time
Influencers:

In the last month, we’ve seen him engage with:

@rabois
@ndahlberg
@volvoshine
@Kantrowitz
@geoffreywoo
@BarbaraComstock
@APompliano
@rsg
@shervin
@InvestorAmnesia

...among many, many others.

Creating free distribution and reach by leveraging big audiences.
He’s used this organic reach to drive HUGE PR:

FOX, NBC, Yahoo Tech, Bloomberg, Politico, and a ton of outlets.

But the key here is self-sufficiency:

Twitter community 1st -> then PR

instead of the traditional approach where PR -> hopefully creates community
I’ve been in Miami for a week (let’s not mention Spring Break 2014), and one thing thing is clear:

There’s a culture of hustle. But not SF “hustle.”

Actual hustle. Immigrant-like hustle.

First generation Americans are hungry and educated.

It’s just a great fit.

But...
some questions need to be asked:

What happens when the tech industry flows to Miami?

- Will tech workers accept and fit in within the very diverse Miami culture or will they gentrify it?

- What does the average Miamian think of their mayor hanging out with tech billionaires?
That said...

@FrancisSuarez movement hits home personally for a few reasons:

My long-term goal is to be President of Spain. He’s showing the blueprint for growing your brand.

And, as a first generation American, I love to see Spanish speakers succeed.
To end this --

@FrancisSuarez thank you (and I’m down for a soccer/basketball game whenever)

Also, I’m new to Miami so would love to meet for coffee and cervezas with anyone here!
