This is the only time that I will tag #BellLetsTalk because it's this week, and it's time it stops. Instead of letting a corporation use us for its marketing purposes, let's start #CanadaLetsTalk because it's government action that we need, not more profits for a phone company.
So, #CanadaLetsTalk about our mental health system and supports, that are horrible strained, patchwork and often not evidence-based. Let's talk about a system that has young people on wait lists until they age out and have to start all over again on lists waiting for adult care.
#CanadaLetsTalk about a system that doesn't integrate mental health and physical health, and that is so lacking that those who can, often end up paying for private care, while those who can't fall though the cracks, getting sicker and sometimes dying.
#CanadaLetsTalk about our approach to mental health that focuses on individual responsibility 'we can't help him until he wants help' and assiduously ignores our collective responsibility and systemic failings.
#CanadaLetsTalk about care that is rooted in white, middle-class, colonial structures and provides little support or additional harm to anyone outside of that frame.
And #CanadaLetsTalk about how we've allowed a profit-grubbing corporation that treats its workers poorly, dominate this conversation. It's time to take it back and put the responsibility where it belongs - with our decision makers, and with us as a collective.
