Enemy attack was supported by heavy shelling with guns and mortars. With absolute grit and determination, he went from bunker to bunker, giving succor to the wounded and urging his men to fight. However, the enemy managed to obtain a foothold in the platoon locality.(2/5)
Immediately, Lance Naik Karam Singh, who was seriously wounded by then & left with a few men, launched a counter-attack and evicted the enemy after a fierce hand to hand combat, killing two enemy soldiers himself. (3/5)
His action inspired his men and demoralized the enemy proving himself a dauntless leader of men in crisis. Nothing could subdue him as no amount of fire or hardship could break his spirit.(4/5)
For his gallant act, indomitable courage and leadership, saving the vital position of Tithwal and inevitably changed the course of the war, LNk Karam Singh was awarded the PVC, the Highest Military Honour of the Nation. He retired as Subedar and Hony Captain in 1969.
