My research shows that worrying numbers of EU care workers and other key workers are at risk of being forced out of status after the EUSS deadline because many don’t know about the scheme and vast numbers of those who do don’t understand how to secure their rights 2/8
We found that 1 in 7 surveyed online didn't know or were not sure what the EUSS was, 1 in 3 didn't know when the deadline was and 9 in 10 surveyed in person didn't know where to find assistance 3/8
These are the people who have worked tirelessly over the past year to get us through the COVID crisis, putting their lives + their families' lives on the line in order to care for our loved ones. Is this how the Govt will repay them? 4/8
How many others keeping us going are at risk? The Home Office doesn't know. We don’t even know the number of EU residents in the UK, but if 1% of the estimated 4 mil are unable to apply that’s tens of thousands more vulnerable to harsh Hostile Environment policies overnight 5/8
People who have lived and worked here for years could be criminalised for driving a car, renting a flat or providing the services we are so reliant on. Even subject to detention or removal 6/8
It’s less than six months till the EUSS deadline and the UK is still deep in the grips of the pandemic. The situation couldn’t be more urgent. The Govt must act now and #LiftTheDeadline to avoid tens of thousands of EU citizens without status or rights come July 7/8
