With the talk about flex working, home working etc esp with a union context I have been giving thought to what made my first (remote) team work under @sarahjanem75. This was before smartphones...
We were brought together with different experiences and spent time getting to know each other and our project. We decided what our team ‘rules/expectations’ would be and how we would deliver on them.
Then we went off. Each month we saw each other but being all over the nations etc rarely saw each other than that. However we had such a strong bond as a team. Why? I think it was because we had that initial experience. We wanted to support each other
We wanted to be successful for our workers. Everyday I would have a call or make a call to each person in the team (even if it was for 5 mins). This kept us together. Then I had one day in the regional office.
Every month we saw each other at head office
Every month we saw each other at head office
And we spent time catching up, giving ourselves the time to share thing. We had good mgtment, we were clear on what we wanted to achieve. We were trusted to do it but we also felt deep responsibility to do the best we could.
This is a longer thread than intended but the main take away for me is that coming together, the expectation setting and the time to build those relationships so colleagues feel supported and responsible to each other.
