Govt should be throwing the kitchen sink at this. To reduce transmission and keep schools open safely, schools need a significant and urgent boost in funding. Govt must put the resources in place to reduce class sizes, and increase the number of teaching and support staff. /2
Schools need extra money to pay for increased cleaning costs, classroom adjustments, run the in-school track and trace and new testing programmes, and to have single-school transport so children are protected from transmitting or contracting Covid across schools. /3
It’s also vital that this package of funding is easy for schools to access: so much valuable teaching time has already been lost to fighting reams of red tape. The Government are dropping the ball in so many different areas. /4
Liberal Democrats believe education is a right and an investment in our nation’s future. We will continue to call for urgent investment and a proper plan to keep schools open safely to save a generation of young people whose education has been so severely disrupted. /5
