I cannot quite believe the lack of balance on @r4Today programme on return to full school opening. A premature return will result in pupils, eventually, missing more school. We have to get this right - something that the govt. has not done so far.
Everyone wants schools to open when it is safe. The sad truth is that govt. safety measures hitherto did not achieve school safety. Infection rates in secondary school pupils multiplied by 75 during the autumn term.
Data from the children’s task and finish group shows that they primary pupils are 3x and secondary pupils 7x more be the first in a household to be infected with COVID and 2x more likely than any other family member to infect others.
Any road map for return HAS to take into account community infection rates, vaccination rates and new, rigorous measures on school safety in order to protect school staff and the wider community.
It is deeply disturbing that politicians who voted for austerity and were prepared to accept an epidemic of child poverty - 9 children in every average class of 30 are poor and suffer greatly increased rates of mental and physical ill health - are now weaponising mental health.
Perhaps those MPs so concerned about children’s mental health will vote to retain the £20 uplift in universal credit and vote for the provision of free school meals over half term? Will they put their vote where their mouths are?
