It's historical & it's not historical. I wrote Xiao Xiao & The Dragon's Pearl & even my mother asked me about authenticity.
It's... a historical fantasy, but with a lot of imagination thrown in. Because girls in China then weren't that privileged as Xiao Xiao.

What I wanted was a fantasy where the girls had agency. And were the protagonists.

Inspiration? All the period court dramas I watched when I was a kid.
Since this is meant to be YA (or older MG), the protagonists are teens. (Except Xiao Xin who is four/five)
