Fellow Kenyans, a President from a different tribe align well with the national mood. And it is good for the nation as it realigns power brokers, creating room for change. LONG THREAD, FEEL FREE TO DISCARD
Some readers have denied that tribes benefit when one of them is a President. We are either big hypocrites or plain ignorant. Most likely, however, the thought of joyriding on a Presidency mortifies us into denial. We would like to feel “its all our hard work and ingenuity”
I have admitted all along the majority of the people in the tribe do not benefit. To them, Presidency IS A LIABILITY. But this doesn't negate fact that very many people from the same tribe get an unfair advantage over other citizens due to proximity to power in their tribe
Because the power in Kenya is not wielded according to the law. The President is not bound by the constitution. Uhuru’s excesses clearly demonstrate that the new constitution did not succeed in taming the Presidency. It’s still a rogue office serving narrow and partisan interests
So, tribes benefit even if we pretend that we don’t see. Sometimes, the economy of an area or region depends on state power. Those who deny this should tell us why business empires collapse after a regime. Where is Mugoya that thrived under Moi? Or TransCentury under Kibaki?
To get a better perspective, just look at hotels like Sirikwa in Eldoret, WestEnd in Kericho, Midlands in Nakuru, Kabarnet Hotel. They were centres of power and state largesse. They were the hideouts for power brokers hosting state officials for days on end. How are they fairing?
Sometimes power is used to influence national policies to suit a region or people where the president has interest. Priorities are “rigged” to serve narrow business and tribal interests. David Ndii captured this when he accused Uhuru of rigging elections in order to rig economy
Why did Central Bank close Eldoret branch after Moi’s exit? Means it was not there because of national need but plain sectarian purpose. International Airport was similarly pushed through against heavy opposition as it was clearly not national priority then. Hardly is even 2day.
Look at how Uhuru has abused the principles of national economic priorities and equity. SGR terminates at a dry port conveniently associated with the Kenyatta family. Is it a coincidence that Brookside and CBA would flourish under Uhuru Presidency? Examples here are endless
The point? Leaders abuse power to favour their tribes and their regions. This leads to inequitable distribution of development, fortunes, and national pride. Yet we are yet to evolve as a democracy with internal mechanisms to regulate the use of state power or punish power abuse.
Part of the recourse then is democratizing these power excesses by deliberately discriminating the Presidential candidates from the two tribes whose hold of state power is synonymous with power abuse, theft, murders. The reasons for which we remain poor and ethnically divided
Fellow Kenyans, Presidential motorcades should not leave Gatundu and go back to Eldoret – when memories are so fresh. It would be a big step backward for the country. It amounts to handing over power back to Moi and Kanu – REMEMBER THE SUFFERING AND POVERTY before Moi left
Point is not that other tribes are better. Having a President from another tribe is GOOD IN/OF ITSELF. A pastor has boldly stated that we can’t be losing 2bn daily unless the government is privy. So, even if corruption is constant, let other regions enjoy the gravy train
