All Yantras begin with the Bindu or point which represents the nucleus of the phenomenal world. It is the source of creation, therefore it is the beginning of all manifestation. When the Self decides to manifest in the material universe, all energy is compressed in a point.

When the Bindu or supreme consciousness wants to expand, it becomes a circle through the radius of desire. A circle without the Bindu represents the nothingness of empty space without consciousness, therefore a circle without a point symbolizes zero.

In Yantras, when the Bindu or source aspires to an upsurge of inspiration or an upward movement to manifest, a vertical rising or line is created. Thus a vertical line represents dynamic activity or desire by the grace of Shakti.

In contrast the horizontal line represents stability because it is the shortest distance between two adjacent points. It represents the removal of energy from the material world like the inert ascetic form of Shiva resulting in a non-dynamic connection between two points.

When the aspiring dynamic energy of the vertical line (Shakti) meets the stability of the horizontal line (Shiva), the two combine harmoniously & abundance of new creation comes into existence, so when vertical and horizontal lines intersect in the center, we have addition.

When you remove the dynamic activity of the vertical line from the symbol of addition, the consciousness again withdraws from the physical as it does not have the aspiration to add to creation anymore, therefore subtraction is represented by the horizontal line.

11/n In the future, we will explore the most basic geometric shapes & what they represent in Tantra. Hindus used them as building blocks to represent incredibly intricate Yantra models of the Universe & the complex process of material manifestation from subtle consciousness.
