I was inspired by @kareem_carr to make a thread of some of the replies I got over the past few days to my very mild tweet about a particular example of racism in math.
Pointing out racism is apparently "playing the victim" even though I wasn't asking for any "special treatment" or whatever in my tweet.
Of course, someone needed to play the classic "reverse racism" card.
Ahhh yes. The racism of my colleagues is a product of not having high enough expectations for myself? That checks out with my consistent overachievement throughout my lifetime. 🙃
The "maybe you just suck" line was pretty popular.
Do most people know what their IQ is?
Back to the "victim mentality" bit.
This guy had even shittier comments than these which I will spare the reader.
A racist math stereotype in a meme making fun of math being racist? *chef's kiss*
These comments get paired since they have the same core message which is apparently that I face no repercussions for calling out my colleagues' racism. Jokes on them because I face many and unfortunately not just in the form of shitty comments on twitter.
This is the kind of sh*t I got to hear from my white male classmates in grad school.
There are more but I'm getting tired. So I'll end with this gem which just annoyed me on every level.
Oh wait. Nevermind. I forgot about this one. Apparently it is narcissistic to say racism from white mathematicians makes my experience in math more difficult than theirs?
Okay. This is really the last one I'll share. Because I think we can all have a hearty laugh at the idea that the math community is one of the "least racist and sexist communities on earth". 😂
