When publications see their view numbers fall post-Agent Orange because they no longer get the outrage clicks, they lean hard on looking for other ways to rile you up to hate tweet them? With say, Pelotons and Rolexes? Here's another example below. Wanna know how to fight this?
You start by refusing to like/RT/QRT anything they post, even if it's news you think is worthy. Let their engagement fall across the board. Like/RT/QRT other better publications reporting on the news you want to spread instead.
When a pub starts posting a flurry of articles designed for hate clicks, it's a sign their subscription is sinking. Ironically, the hate clicks will lower that, but ad revenue boosts will cover the financial accounting they'll have to show for the month so it's a short-term fix.
Pubs like these rely on the fact that their other reporters cover good news, or are the first to break a story to get back into your good graces. They know that viewer mindset is fickle with bad memories, and that a good report will bring them back to the fold. Don't do that.
Give your money to other pubs so that THEY have more finances and opportunities to break a story first. Click on their actual articles to read instead of sharing their headlines. Posting a short snippet of their article in your tweet helps click-thrus (but provide the link too!)
The best way to discourage stuff like this when it comes to the more dangerous articles with misleading headlines is, of course, for Twitter to start adding the same "information in this tweet is disputed" disclaimers to publications,

but I hope for too much in this world
