the more i learn about queer history the more i love the fact that neil and terry gave us aziraphale, a character who CHOSE to stay queer coded in the eyes of society throughout it all. there’s something really powerful about that whether it was intentional or not
for me it feels so good to have a character who (whether human sexuality etc applies to him or not) is read as a gay man, knows he is read that way, has the experiences that come along with that and chooses to keep it/be true to it even though he could change it in an instant
idk if this rings true for anyone else but as someone who has been asked countless times whether i’d choose to stop being LGBTQ+ if i could, it’s fucking BEAUTIFUL to see a character who could stop himself from being read as a gay guy with ease but definitively chooses not to
Az said fuck you im wonderful in all of my perceived gayness and i will never change it, not for heaven or hell or earth with all of its prejudices. i adore him and i adore the fact that he’s coded as gay and then REWARDED FOR BEING TRUE TO HIMSELF RATHER THAN PUNISHED OR KILLED
THIS is what queer people deserve to see and read. these are the stories we deserve to grow up with to negate the societal narratives that fill us with fear and self hatred. for every necessary tale of a painful past, i want to start seeing ten more full of celebration
@neilhimself SO many thanks to you and sir terry for writing aziraphale the way that you did. he exists in the world being read as gay, he is amazing, and that makes me feel amazing. such simple things can have an unquantifiable effect on folk like me and how we view ourselves
