i attended a jewish boarding school in jerusalem for a time. and we got the usual talk about how intermarriage would be the death of judaism. when i got back to my dorm my roommate was sobbing. you see, her mother wasn’t jewish.
don’t ever tell me that intermarriage is destroying judaism. we are destroying it just fine by doing garbage like that to the perfectly devout jewish girl who was my roommate.
what an absolutely wretched thing to do. who knows how many children have been told that their existence was a failure on one of their parents’ parts. no fudging wonder conservative judaism collapsing.
there are so many important comments and responses to this. i really encourage jwitter to read through and see how damaging the way we talk about interfaith families can be.
