I'm starting a thread about a hobby of mine - Production Design from the Golden Age of #Hollywood! Whenever I need a mental break, I put on a favorite film and screen grab the sets. I find so much inspiration from them for my own projects. Hope you enjoy!
First up! AFTER THE THIN MAN (1936, Art Direction by Cedric Gibbons). Gibbons was THE KING of deco style, & there is always so much to love.

Nick & Nora's SF House. The stairwell detail is just gorgeous, w what looks like a blonde oak panel detail w a lot of streamline accents.
The reverse of the same room. Obviously, this was built on a stage but DEAR LORD the scale! The high ceilings! Those windows! Even the fish bowl is gigantic.
The breakfast nook of their bedroom suite which must be 40 feet wide. I mostly want to talk about these sconces. The sconce-game of the 1930s was so strong guys, prepare yourself for sconce love in every movie I post, haha.
It's really rare to see a deco kitchen on film, so I always perk up whenever there's one on screen. I wish this was in color so bad - what do we think? Chiffon yellow? Robin's egg blue? Mint green? It has to be some kind of pastel. Love all of the chrome and then the fun stripes.
And the front door, with a hand painted mural above the marble door surround. So gorgeous. The set design is exactly like Nick and Nora: modern with a wink, so expensive looking but completely unstuffy. The kind of spaces you would drink a million highballs in.
We now turn to Swingtime (1936, Art Direction by Van Nest Polglase). Polglase created some of the most iconic sets for RKO pictures, including Citizen Kane, Gilda, & all of the Fred & Ginger films.
So many of the Fred & Ginger films are set against high end hotels or exotic locales, so the sets express that jet-setting attitude. Let's talk about the wall detail above the setee & that little velvet shell chair.
