Some thoughts on how connecting people to nature can help save the planet.
1. Protecting and restoring our old-growth forests and natural ecosystems is essential for human health.
Fact: No pathway limits global warming to 1.5°C or 2°C without nature-based climate solutions.

2. Protecting intact, biodiverse ecosystems is hands-down the most effective natural climate solution in today. Taking immediate action could get us 80% of the way to our Paris Agreement CO2 targets by 2030 alone.
3. This will also help us achieve our goal of protecting 25% of our land and marine ecosystems by 2025, and 30% by 2030. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-canada-pledges-to-stem-biodiversity-loss-and-ensure-pandemic-recovery/
4. Not only are healthy forests and wetlands good for the planet, but they’re good for us too. People with more nature in their lives are happier, healthier and less stressed. #cobenefits

5. Of course nature-based climate solutions don’t replace our need to reduce GHG emissions from fossil fuels, which emit by far the most carbon within Canada.
6. And while planting 2 billion trees is a wonderful goal, it does nothing to reduce GHG emissions today—any climate benefits will be seen well past 2050.
7. As for carbon capture + storage, it gets us a maximum of 13% of the way to our targets vs. 35% per year with natural climate solutions. So let’s invest more today into preserving the original and best carbon-sucking technology: intact trees.
8. That’s one of the reasons why I’m so passionate about connecting people to nature: because research shows that people who are more nature-connected are also more likely to protect it. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0272494418308557
