A
about vaccine prioritization from the perspective of a patient with very elevated mortality risk due to cancer but is “too young” to have a turn in line at this point.

Vaccine prioritization put frontline healthcare workers as top priority. These are the people who risk their lives the most, who are in close contact w Covid patients, caring for people, treating & cleaning.
Absolutely fair. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who disagrees.

Next, in most countries and states it is the turn of those living or working in long term care facilities, Ă population that has been hit very hard by virus.
Also pretty fair. The mortality rates in this group are unacceptable.

Then we often saw it being the turn of all other healthcare professionals. These are people caring for others’ health, not Covid related, but still having to expose themselves due in order to care for others.
Another group that makes sense to protect.

Then there’s some controversy about the next groups. There are other essential occupations, & people are risking their lives so we can eat, drive, open schools, etc. Or some areas are sticking to the high mortality rate groups.
5/

Whatever order these last two groups go in, the definitions of the groups really matter.
A) What occupations are essential?
B) What groups have high mortality rates?

A) is a subjective question.
B) is not. Just look at the data.
Which groups of people have a high mortality rate from Covid. Choose a number. Every group above that number, gets the next spot in line.

And HERE lies the issue.
Most health agencies are saying that the only group that should get prioritized due to high mortality rate is the elderly.
They are defining the next group in line as those 75+, or those 65+.

That is BULLSHIT.
Yes, age is one variable that plays a role & the elderly SHOULD be prioritized due to high risk.
But others groups ARE HIGH RISK, TOO!
Unfortunately, young & middle aged people can have serious illnesses.

People under 65 can have cancer, kidney disease, heart failure, sickle cell disease, organ transplants, ALS, and others.
Having one of these conditions puts a person at severe risk for dying from Covid.

For example, the mortality of cancer patients who get Covid is 15-30%. Those are numbers seen in the 80+ groups!
Yet, because their age isn’t always 65+, they’re being denied priority.

Ultimately, this is just another gut punch for young people who are seriously ill. Not only are we dealing with the hardships of living with a terrible illness, but we also have to hear that it’s not that bad because we’re young.
This is wrong on SO MANY LEVELS.
