I dug into a case where a NJ police chief was accused of misconduct, then quietly retired. When I tried to get the chief’s side of the story, his lawyer said I had no right to publish confidential info, threatening a lawsuit. These details would be public record in most states. https://twitter.com/njdotcom/status/1353298342483255297
This is to say that my news organization will do due diligence to make sure we’re publishing accurate information. We will also not be cowed by baseless legal threats.
A woman left two very rambling voicemails today in response to my story about the Penns Grove police chief. In this one, she makes some vague reference to Hitler and calls me a homosexual (I'm not gay, but some of my favorite people are!) Extremely weird. https://soundcloud.com/spsulliv/voicemail-from-reader
I tried to call her back but the number was not active. If you think I am a secret gay hitler, please DM me and we can discuss why I'm just a mild mannered news reporter.
I do not post this as a joke but because I know many LGBTQ folks, women and people of color who get harassed like this all the time. We should normalize rejecting it outright. Just because I'm a cisgender straight white guy doesn't mean I should let this stuff go.
I don't have any concerns for my safety. But this is what so many of my colleagues from marginalized communities go through. It's not acceptable.
This person also said, "I know your buds are impressed when you use the term 'statehouse reporter.' You know, Trenton is basically trash."

I haven't been a statehouse reporter for over a year but it's still a pretty good burn. But Trenton is not trash. It's a vibrant city.
also in the interest of full disclosure I have gained like 20 or 30 pounds since the image that's on my soundcloud page was taken
