I got started out in digital marketing as a jack of all trades generalist.

Eventually I found out I was really good at email.

Here's a list of 17 things I wish I knew when I started email marketing.

👇
Segments and flow filters are super easy to mess up.

If you have someone who can review your work, I recommend it.
Fancy html isn’t necessary.

When I first started I tried to hire an html designer and it wasn’t worth it (perhaps at a certain scale it would be) but not for the account I was on.
Font size changes and colors should rarely be done in the text box.

Instead use the styles tab.
The styles tab is your best friend.

Using the styles tab you can specify a certain size of font for desktop vs mobile.
Custom fonts are overrated.

~60% of your audience won’t see them because they use Gmail. (I still use them)
Good copy is underrated.

If I had to choose between a world class designer or a worldclass copywriter, I would choose the copywriter EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
It’s kinda crazy how easily you can mess up your flow filters.
Plan ahead.

Emails take time to concept, write, design, build, and schedule.
You should always send a preview of your emails to yourself.
Mobile view is super easy to screw up.

Make sure you check the mobile view of your emails. Even if you don’t use mobile only blocks
Always send sale/product reminders.

Hardly anyone actually cares about your brand like you think they do. They will forget about your promos, remind them before it ends.
You’re always going to make mistakes.

When you do own up to it, and tell the customer what happened(when it makes sense) and sign off on it with your own name.
When you or someone on your team make mistakes, give them grace.

There is nothing quite like the anxiety of clicking send, don’t make it worse.
Links are a common source of mistakes.

Triple check these.
There’s so much more you can do in klaviyo than you realize.

Just spend time clicking buttons and playing around in Klaviyo to find more of these. I still find stuff I didn't know about.
There isn't a single way to success.

This goes for life too. If someone says you have to follow the XYZ playbook to have success, you shouldn't listen to them.
Flow filters so easy to mess up.
As I think of more here, I'll tack them on. If you want to make sure you're getting him insights on email marketing, sign up for my weekly newsletter here.

Templates are underrated.

Sticking to templates or close to the template makes email builds far faster, with less back and forths.
