Supply shortages, cancelled appointments, difficult scheduling systems…

Vaccination in NYC remains maddeningly confusing.

So here is the latest on the who, how, and where of getting vaccinated…
1/
How has the supply shortage affected appts?
* There was a wave of cancellations in NYC last week. Some sites temporarily closed & others have paused new scheduling. But vaccination continues at many locations & NYC is expected to receive a shipment of approx 100k doses on Tue. 2/
Do the supply problems put appointments for 2nd shots in jeopardy?
* No. NYC sets aside a large separate stock for 2nd doses (200k+). 3/
Has there been any change in who is eligible for vaccination in NY?
* Not since Jan 11. Here is the exhaustive list of who is currently eligible: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-vaccine-eligibility.page 4/
What about people who are immunocompromised?
* Eligibility for this group had been announced, but rules on this have not been determined and @NYGovCuomo has said that the supply shortage means their inclusion will be delayed. 5/
Where is the best place to start if I want to get vaccinated?
* The answer to this is simple and underappreciated: Check with your current doctor, clinic or medical provider. Many of them are part of hospital or other vaccination networks and can get you an appointment. 6/
Is there a comprehensive list of all the places I can get vaccinated?
* The closest thing is the City’s vaccine finder (but it’s missing some private hospitals and State-run sites): https://vaccinefinder.nyc.gov/  7/
Where can I schedule a vaccine appointment at major private hospital networks?

* Mt. Sinai: https://www.mountsinai.org/about/covid19/vaccine-information/schedule

* NY Presby: https://www.myconnectnyc.org/mychart/Authentication/Login?postloginurl=Scheduling

* Hospital for Special Surgery: https://www.hss.edu/covid-vaccine-community.asp

Where can I schedule a vaccine appointment at State-run sites?

* Javits: https://apps3.health.ny.gov/doh2/applinks/cdmspr/2/counties?OpID=50502320

* Aqueduct: https://apps3.health.ny.gov/doh2/applinks/cdmspr/2/counties?OpID=50503467

* Pop-up sites (churches, NYCHA, etc): https://somosvaccination.mdland.com/p/sites/

Is there a central place to check online for open appointments?
* An ingenious tool built by volunteers scans most vaccination scheduling systems in NYC to check for open appointments. Updates every few minutes, so you will be hitting refresh.

Are there any vaccination sites reserved just for seniors?
* Yes. Pharmacies in NY are only allowed to vaccinate aged 65+. A growing # pharmacies are now vaccinating, including Rite Aid, Costco, Duane Reade & some independents. Also there are some seniors-only NYCHA sites. 11/
Is there free transportation to vaccination sites for seniors?
* Yes! NYers aged 65+ who make an appointment at a City-operated site (i.e. Dept of Health or public hospitals/clinics) will be offered free transportation if needed. /12
Will I ever be asked to give a credit card to reserve an appointment?
* NO! Beware of fraudulent calls/texts making the rounds in NYC on this. In fact there is no cost for vaccination in NY. You will be asked to give your insurance info but there will be zero co-pay. /13
When will people w/ underlying conditions become eligible?
* Unclear. Officially the current sched is April, depending heavily on the pace of supply. But equity demands this group be added sooner, since people of color are more likely to have high-risk underlying conditions. 14/
When will other groups of workers be added to eligibility?
* Unclear, but as w/ underlying conditions, equity demands we add key excluded groups asap, including food service, taxi, mail/parcel delivery, nail salons etc. Also critical that we vaccinate incarcerated NYers. /15
Can I sign up to be informed when I become eligible?
* Unfortunately there is not yet a system to update you on your personal eligibility. Best option is NYC’s covid text alerts which will update when new groups become eligible. Text COVID to 692-692, COVIDESP for Spanish. /16
Is there demographic data on who’s being vaccinated in NYC?
* Not yet. It’s critical that this be made public asap. There are alarming signs that people of color are significantly under-represented in vaccination so far. We urgently need to fix this. /17
Will this ever be less complicated?
* If we get expanded supply from the feds, create more ubiquitous vaccine sites, build a single interface for scheduling, and expand eligibility...then this will all be much easier. We can and must fight hard to make all that happen. 18/18
