On Monday, Foreign Affairs Ministers will discuss EU #energy and #climate diplomacy.

Read our fantastic newsletter 👇🏾 to find out why EU #climate diplomacy is more important than ever.

And read in this thread what we should expect on #energy. https://twitter.com/e3g/status/1352539508785487873
#security has been the overarching principle of #energydiplomacy in the past. There's a strong case for #climate to replace the old paradigm. But what does that mean?
The nature of the #energy security has changed fundamentally. In 2017, @JDuttonUK @jonathangaventa & I argued that climate impacts, cyber security and sector integration make our "n-1" concept look unfit for purpose. Time to develop a new guide for infrastructure priorities.
Already in 2016, G7 nations pledged to end inefficient #fossilfuel subsidies by 2025. Foreign Ministers should reaffirm this pledge tomorrow, and adopt a faster timeline for #coal finance.

Yet, the challenge is at home: EU subsidies have been on the rise since 2015 (EC data).
The EU is however still promoting the build out of fossil infrastructure - e.g. in the recent #GreenDeal for the Western Balkans or by support for a whole new producing region in the EastMed.

This significantly reduces the EU's future geopolitical space. Time for a rethink.
The EU has much to offer: cooperation on cutting edge technology and processes such as #green steel, innovative #governance instruments such as the #energyefficeincy first principle and its trade power can be leveraged via standards on high emissions products (incl methane).
The EU can take advantage of offering these things as a cooperative, yet assertive package - and set the tone for transforming geopolitical and trading relationships in the context of #climatechange.
