Kong is a product of a racist serial, Godzilla is the righteous response to a popular war crime. We in the west identify with Kong because he presents the same tragic/romantic cosplay that American men largely imagine themselves enacting: bestial, but tender and misunderstood.
I'm not saying you're racist for rooting for one fictional monster or another, I'm saying these monsters remain current because they tap deep veins in our respective national identities. And that we're all riddled with buttons we never knew existed. *That's* why we're racist.
And that's also why we should seek to understand the totems to which we affix our goats. Knowing why something blows your skirt up is a good step towards getting a better look behind the collective curtain at the smallness of the Ozs that control us.
Consider too that after they were attacked with WMD inflicted on civilian populations, the Japanese created Godzilla. And that after 9/11, we created the MCU. Monsters all who destroy cities, but are sad so we can frame as romantic, misunderstood, Byronic heroes for us to LARP.
The thing that ties it all together is that we normies are largely helpless spectators. We root on one or the other as our lives are destroyed completely by their lack of interest and attention to us. Disenfranchisement codified as franchises. For what it's worth, I collect toys.
Last thought, this KONG V GODZILLA flick is at the lowest level the story of two immigrants: Asian and African, destroying American cities. Kong brought here in chains, yes? Godzilla lured here by our neglect of the environment. It'll be a massive hit and now you know why.
Oh - last last thing, you should be suspicious whenever a political campaign is just the spewing of "Vote for me or Kong will rape your woman and Godzilla will vaporize your jobs. And look! From the south! A caravan approaches."
*I said "immigrant" and I meant "foreigner". Slaves were not immigrants, they were human beings kidnapped, raped, murdered and their descendants are used as fodder for a legal system in which slavery is Constitutionally allowed. These images in pop entertainment are not benign.
Fascinating to me is that both Kong and Godzilla are the by-products of white violence.
"The unexamined life is not worth living." - Socrates. It's also not worth engaging with. I know the kneejerk witticism here will be "My just likes monster SMASH" and, honey, baby, I know that. You can ask yourself why or not, that's entirely up to you. But I'm blocking you.
