New Age spirituality (which was popularized by the West in the 70s) is another form of colonialism disguised as spiritual awareness. I have total understanding of practitioners of indigenous religions who gatekeep their practices.
When New Age spirituality tells others they have the right to “pick and choose”, you interact with those who disregard facts for whatever they feel like doing. You have people talking over actual practitioners from these practices on what’s correct. How is that not colonization?
Why are the main people known for talking about chakras not Hindu? Main people doing reiki that aren’t Japanese? Main people talking about orishas that are not olorishas?
And why do people disregard those who are practitioners, elders, and/or those who were literally born in these practices whenever they speak the truth? If we can understand cultural appropriation, why can’t we understand cultural religious disrespect?
When these people correct you, it’s not personal. With all these planets in Aqua, it would benefit the world to be a little bit less self-absorbed when it comes to cultural practices. And learn from people who are literally born/raised/have years of experience in these areas.
People say they’re aren’t religious but they’re “spiritual”. The reality is, New Age spirituality takes from INDIGENOUS South and East Asian, Aboriginal, and African/Diasporic traditional cultural practices. You are literally practicing pieces of religions without full context.
Last point: Let’s look for the originators in these fields. Let’s credit the originators in these areas & learn from them. Because if we continue at the pace currently of letting inaccurate information of traditional customs be rampant, we are contributing to spiritual warfare.
