I recently found a series of excellent, thought-provoking speeches by historian Donald Livingston on how the conception of America changed post-Civil War from a 'Jeffersonian' view where states held dominance, to a 'Lincolnian' view of America as a single, indivisible nation.
To the Jeffersonians, republics worked best when kept small; this allows for far better representation of peoples within their governments. Secession into new republics is allowed.

To Lincolnians, there should be no limit to the size of republics, and secession isn't permitted.
The Lincolnian conception of America dominated from 1865 to the 1960s - but it then started to disintegrate. It allowed a secular ideology based purely on 'natural rights', unfiltered through tradition, to gain dominance.

This paved the way for modern Cultural Marxism to grow.
I highly recommend listening to the full speech here - there's way too much good information to summarize in a simple Twitter thread. It's an incredible criticism of how many modern "American nationalists" see America.
